Charlotte City Council approved a plan last week to build a new hotel – in the parking lot of an existing Marriott.

The plan is the latest increase in density for the SouthPark area, which is becoming less suburban and more urban with infill development.

The 170-room hotel will be built at the corner of Rexford and Roxborough roads, and will total eight stories. A two-story parking deck will be built behind the hotel, along Rexford Road, adjacent to the existing hotel. The new hotel is planned to be an AC Hotel, a “European-inspired” brand owned by Marriott. Another AC Hotel is under construction atop the EpiCentre.

The existing Charlotte Marriott SouthPark is a 200-room hotel. In a community meeting held in April, a representative of the developer and owner, JWM Family Enterprises, said the Marriott is often full and has to turn potential customers away on a regular basis.

Charlotte City Council voted unanimously in favor of the project. A traffic estimate from Charlotte city staff shows the development could add an additional 1,390 daily vehicle trips to the site, based on adding 170 new hotel rooms.
