In January, we reported that the closely-watched construction of the Publix in South End will wrap up by “late March or early April.” It’s now looking like the latter date is more likely.

The Florida-based grocery chain hasn’t set a firm opening date, but “we are targeting early second quarter,” said Kim Reynolds, a Publix media and communications manager. “We are getting real close.” The second quarter technically starts on April 1.

The South Boulevard construction that had caused traffic headaches in either direction in January has since been completed, and the new 266-unit Camden Southline apartment complex held a grand opening March 5. Construction of the apartment building is slated to be completed later this year.

The 55,000 square-foot Publix on South Boulevard and Iverson Way is across the street from Lowe’s Home Improvement and adjacent to the new Southline complex. It’ll be less than half a mile from a new Harris Teeter, which will open in 2016 at Poindexter Drive and South Boulevard.

Publix, which just entered the North Carolina market in February of last year, operates 1,097 stores in six states in the South, including 11 in the Charlotte area.
