Shake Shack, whose burgers and milkshakes boast a cult-like following, will open its first Charlotte location before the end of the year at Park Road Shopping Center.
A spokeswoman said the New York-based chain did not have any hard details to share at this time about the Park Road location, other than that it will open in late 2017. Building permits filed Monday also confirm the new restaurant’s Park Road location.
This will be Shake Shack’s first location in the Carolinas. The next closest restaurants are in Virginia, Kentucky and Georgia.
Shake Shack’s menu includes burgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, frozen custards, milkshakes and more.
The exact opening date and location were not immediately available. Several other national restaurant chains have opened recently in Park Road Shopping Center, including Chopt, Burton’s Grill and Urban Cookhouse.
Last year, Shake Shack’s CEO Danny Meyer told CNBC that the restaurant chain would not expand into North Carolina as long as the controversial House Bill 2 was on the books. HB2, which mandated that transgender people use the restroom in government facilities that corresponds with the gender on their birth certificate, was repealed in March. It was replaced with a compromise bill that is also controversial because it restricts anti-discrimination ordinances in cities and counties.
