The German grocery chain Aldi is hosting a hiring event Tuesday to staff its stores in Matthews and Mint Hill.

Aldi has been investing in its Charlotte-area stores and plans to expand further into the area’s competitive market. The chain has been remodeling existing stores, for example, and hiring store-level workers over the last several months.

Last week, Aldi announced plans to spend $3.4 billion to grow its footprint to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022. The effort could further intensify competition among Charlotte’s low-cost grocers.

Tuesday’s hiring event takes place between 7 a.m.-1 p.m., then from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel at 11425 E. Independence Blvd. in Matthews. The company is looking to hire store associates, positions that pay $12.50 an hour.

Aldi said applicants must be 18 years or older. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, as is retail experience. Applicants are subject to a drug screening and background check, and must be able to lift 45 pounds, Aldi said.
