A family-owned specialty mattress company is relocating after 86 years in the same spot in South End.

Dilworth Mattress Co. has operated its showroom on West Tremont Avenue since 1931. The longtime seller of homemade bedding and mattresses is moving to 211 West Worthington Ave., at the corner of Hawkins Street near the Design Center of the Carolinas.

Dilworth Mattress consolidated its footprint over the years from eight stores to its single factory and showroom in South End, where it has relied on word of mouth and business of repeat customers.

According to a 2014 Observer story, Alan Hirch, the company’s third-generation owner, at a customer’s request once made a round mattress designed to hang from the ceiling.

“Tremont Avenue has gone from being the location for the old circus grounds and a large fertilizer plant to a street providing upscale apartments and offices,” Hirsch said in a statement.

“With the new townhomes and new families moving in, we wanted to be able to continue our service while staying in our historic neighborhood.”

Hirsch could not be reached for additional comment Tuesday.
