The highly anticipated Publix supermarket in South End will open April 18.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, the Florida-based grocery chain said the newest Charlotte location will hold a grand opening that Saturday at 7 a.m.

The 55,000 square-foot Publix on South Boulevard and Iverson Way is across the street from Lowe’s Home Improvement and next to the new Camden Southline apartment complex. It’ll be less than half a mile from a new Harris Teeter, which will open in 2016 at Poindexter Drive and South Boulevard.

Construction of the new store at 2222 South Blvd. that had caused traffic delays in either direction earlier this year coincided with construction of the the new 266-unit Southline complex next door. The apartment building held a grand opening March 5, and its construction is slated to be wrapped up later this year.

Publix, which just entered the North Carolina market in February 2014, operates 1,097 stores in six states in the South, including 11 in the Charlotte area.
