Fuddruckers has closed its Matthews location after about two decades in business there. Taking its place will be a new-to-town breakfast and lunch restaurant called First Watch.

Started in the early 1980s, First Watch has a menu featuring items like avocado toast, farm stand breakfast tacos and lemon ricotta pancakes. The chain announced its plans to expand into the Charlotte region last year.

Franchise group Good Morning Carolinas plans to develop 12 new First Watch restaurants over the next four years in the Charlotte, Columbia, Spartanburg and Greenville, S.C., areas.

The goal is to open the Matthews location sometime in the first quarter of 2018, according to Eleni Kouvatsos, a spokeswoman for the chain.

An exact opening date was not immediately available.

Fuddruckers announced the closure of its restaurant at 1643 Matthews Township Parkway on its Facebook page earlier this month.

The burger chain’s next closest location is in Asheville.
