Peloton, an upscale indoor cycling company, is opening its first Charlotte showroom in SouthPark mall late this summer.
The company will be in a 2,182 square-foot space previously occupied by Smart Bamboo, a mattress and bed retailer that closed this month, according to mall owner Simon Property Group.
Founded in 2012, Peloton specializes in high-tech stationary bikes and software that tracks performance metrics and lets users participate in live and on-demand fitness group classes. Peloton says it is "changing the way people get fit through a comprehensive and socially connected-experience," according to a statement in May, when the company announced that it planned to open a 35,000 square-foot flagship store in Manhattan.
Peloton's bikes are sold online and at a number of showrooms across the U.S., including that one coming to Charlotte. The company has one other North Carolina location in Durham, according to its website.
In Charlotte, boutique fitness studios and retailers have been popping up more often in recent years, as people prioritize fitness and spend more on their well-being. Locally, the trend is evident in the expansion of home-grown concepts like Hilliard Studio Method to the popularity of well-known national chains Flywheel Sports.
"We do indeed have plans to open a Peloton showroom in Charlotte in late summer and are very excited to open in the market," spokeswoman Jessica Kleiman said in an email. An opening date was not immediately available.
