Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries will open its latest burger joint in Matthews on June 4.
The restaurant, which will be at 7800 Stevens Mill Road, specializes in never-frozen burgers, cheesesteaks and frozen custard. The chain is known for its retro-themed diner decor.
According to a statement from the company Thursday, the new Matthews location will be owned by local businessman Larry Meadows and operated by his wife, Carol. His brother Jason will be involved in some of its business operations.
“I’m just as proud of Hwy 55’s small-business owners as I am our fresh burger and one-of-a-kind hospitality,” Hwy 55 president and CEO Kenney Moore said in the statement.

The new Matthews location’s frozen custard menu was designed and created by art students at a nearby school, the company said. The new restaurant will routinely hold fundraisers for area schools.
Hwy 55 was founded in Goldsboro in 1991. The chain operates 115 other restaurants in 11 states, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates. It operates seven other restaurants in the Charlotte area.
