South End residents may have noticed some construction at IceHouse in Atherton Mill.
The sports bar is re-branding itself and will open Friday as Bonz Smoke & Taphouse with an expanded menu, larger whiskey selection, new signs and interior upgrades.
“IceHouse was great. We just want it to be better than great,” says manager Ric Nagle.
The new Bonz menu features about 60 percent of what was on the IceHouse menu, including some of its most popular items. Its revamped menu features Southern items like a pimento cheeseburger, buffalo sliders, jambalaya and a Texas brisket plate.

Bonz, which remains under the same owners as IceHouse, also has a new whiskey menu (since “whiskey is trending,” Nagle says), still has 30 high-definition TVs, including five on its 100-seat patio, and is installing booths inside. The inside now seats about 220 people.
Over 75 percent of Bonz’s 38 beer taps are North Carolina craft beers, and 30 percent of its whiskey is poured from oak barrels, according to its new website. Bonz will feature Angel’s Envy as its signature whiskey for $8 every day (it’s normally $12-$14, Nagle says.)
It also remains the official University of South Carolina alumni bar, Nagle says. “We’ve always been a Gamecock bar and hopefully always will be.”
The big IceHouse sign out front facing South Boulevard will be removed and replaced with a temporary Bonz sign for Friday’s re-opening, which will be at 5 p.m. – in time for the Panther’s pre-season opener against the Buffalo Bills, which starts at 7 p.m.
The bar will also host a grand opening the weekend of Aug. 28 with live music and giveaways, Nagle adds.
Another change in Atherton Mill: Anthropologie is slated to open this fall next to Luna’s Living Kitchen.
