Developer Edens confirmed Tuesday that a new concept called J. Crew Mercantile will open in the Park Road Shopping Center in early 2016.

A building permit was issued for the store in September for space next to Blackhawk Hardware that was once occupied by Toys & Co., which closed its doors at that location last winter.

The Mercantile concept was launched earlier this year and includes the same products found at J. Crew Factory stores. The Mercantile stores are to be located in shopping complexes that are closer to residential areas. Bloomberg recently reported that J. Crew plans to open 10 Mercantile stores this year, “with future expansion plans into 2016.”

“Partnering with J. Crew Mercantile is an important step toward bringing in more national retailers for Park Road and the entire Charlotte market,” Lyle Darnall, managing director at Edens, said in a statement.

Other national retailers at the Park Road complex include New York-based Chopt, Nashville-based Juice Bar and a Charleston-based Vietnamese restaurant called Co that will open this fall.

Edens bought the Park Road Shopping Center in 2011 for $82 million and has undertaken extensive renovations since. The Columbia-based developer also operates the Myers Park Center, Atherton Mill and Kenilworth Commons.

J. Crew currently operates two other J. Crew Mercantile locations.
