Publix will open a new supermarket in Indian Trail sometime in 2017. This will be the first Publix in Union County.

The new 49,000 square-foot grocery store will be at the Shoppes at Hanfield at East Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road and Old Charlotte Highway, Publix said in a statement Friday.

The store will be build from the ground up, Publix said. It’s expected to employ between 125-150 people.

Publix opened its first North Carolina supermarket in Ballantyne in 2014. Since then, it’s been expanding rapidly throughout Charlotte and competing closely with Matthews-based Harris Teeter. Earlier this week, Publix said it’s also opening a Harrisburg store in 2017.

Florida-based Publix operates 15 stores in the Charlotte area.
