Starting May 9, Belk will no longer offer free giftwrapping for its credit cardholders.
Instead, the Charlotte department store chain will offer a selection of pre-wrapped gift box kits that range in price from $2.99-$4.99, spokeswoman Jessica Graham told the Observer Tuesday. Elite customers – those who spend $1,500 at Belk in a calendar year – receive 12 free boxes for the year.
The move follows the department store chain’s sale in December to New York-based Sycamore Partners for $3 billion. Belk executives have previously said customers won’t notice many major changes under the new ownership.
The gift-wrap transition is happening because Belk is changing the benefits offered to premier (those who spend $600 at Belk in a year) and elite Belk Rewards card customers, Graham said. They will now receive additional exclusive discounts and shopping events.
Bridal gift wrap will still be free for any purchase from an active bridal registry.
