As part of an extensive redevelopment, the Fresh Market in the Strawberry Hill area in South Charlotte will be moving into a new, larger building closer to Providence Road.
Steve Vermillion, managing partner at MPV Properties, said Fresh Market’s current spot in the development provides “virtually no visibility” from Providence and Sardis roads.
“We think people sometimes forget it’s even back there,” Vermillion said. “By moving them out to the street and redoing the BB&T parcel, we think we’ll create a good bit more visibility, and that’s critical for a retailer.”
The market will be moving into a newly constructed, 22,000-square-foot building, which is 5,000-6,000 square feet larger than its current spot, Vermillion said. Five Strawberry Hill apartment buildings will be taken down to make way for the market and its parking lot, he added.
Fresh Market’s old building will be divided up into new retail space, which MPV is currently marketing. Marsh Properties owns the center.
The old BB&T building at the corner of Providence and Sardis will be demolished. A new BB&T will be erected on the parcel, Vermillion said.
Vermillion said the hope is for construction on the redevelopment to start later this year, and it should wrap up in the first quarter of 2018. The firm hasn’t identified a construction company for the project yet.
