There are now more options for getting alcohol delivered to your doorstep in Charlotte.
Instacart, the delivery service that recently launched its service in Charlotte with Food Lion and other grocers, starting Thursday is partnering with Total Wine & More in Charlotte, Raleigh and Durham.
The service works a bit like Uber – a personal shopper accepts a customer’s order via the Instacart website or mobile app, goes to the store and delivers the order to them. The first delivery fee is waived, then it’s $5.99 (plus the cost of the order) after that.
For beer and wine orders, customers will be required to provide their date of birth during the online checkout process to confirm they’re 21 or older, California-based Instacart said this week in a statement. Customers also have to be home at the time of delivery to show proof they’re of legal age.

“We know that North Carolina has a wonderful craft beer market,” said Nick Friedrich, a general manager at Instacart. “(Total Wine) is excited about launching the service for consumers there. They feel like for their core business, this could be an additive experience for their consumers.”
“We didn’t necessarily use competition as a proxy for whether we should go into the market, to be honest. It was more driven by our understanding of the market, and the customer base,” Friedrich said.
Instacart will deliver from Total Wine to the following zip codes in Charlotte: 28282, 28280, 28202, 28203, 28204, 28209, 28207, 28205, 28211 and 28210.
In Charlotte, Instacart also has delivery service from Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Publix, Whole Foods, Costco and BJ’s Wholesale Club. Total Wine has three stores in the Charlotte area.
