A Halloween store will open temporarily in South End, in the building once occupied by furniture store By Design.
Spirit Halloween will be a temporary tenant in the space at 2130 South Blvd., according to the developer Edens, which manages the Atherton Mill property. The new tenant’s lease extends through Halloween, and they are expected to move in soon, an Edens spokeswoman said.
By Design recently sold off its remaining inventory at its stores in South End and Pineville before closing both locations.
Also recently closed nearby: the bar and restaurant Bonz. That space won’t be re-leased, according to Lyle Darnall, managing director of Columbia-based Edens, which also manages the Park Road Shopping Center.

“It’s part of the overall larger redevelopment that includes doing something with that space,” Darnall told the Observer this spring. Ultimately both spaces are “contemplated to be torn down,” Darnall said.
Those major redevelopment plans for the historic Atherton Mill include the addition of apartments atop retail space built along South Boulevard. Much of the existing mill complex along the Blue Line light rail is expected be saved.
