The Italian restaurant Trattoria Antica in Waxhaw will close its doors Sept. 3.
Its owner, Charlotte restaurateur Augusto Conte, will be opening a new restaurant called Via Roma in the Waverly development, on Providence Road Interstate 485. Via Roma will be near the new hotel there, the Hilton Garden Inn.
Conte describes his new spot as a white tablecloth place with a feel that’s similar to that of two of his other restaurants, Toscana and Luce. Among other Italian dishes, the menu will feature fresh pasta, risotto, Italian sea bass, osso buco and veal chops.
Via Roma will also be similar in size to Toscana, around 3,400 square feet, Conte said.

Via Roma’s name comes from the street Conte grew up on in Ischia, an Italian island off the coast of Naples.
Waverly is still under construction, so there’s no set opening date yet for Via Roma. Conte said he anticipates it will open in early spring next year.
Conte said the retail draw of other stores and residences at the upcoming Waverly development, as well as its location, is what attracted him to the area.
“I think Waxhaw is a great place, but it’s just a little bit too far for a lot of people. Waverly is a great opportunity, and I like the development and the energy there,” Conte says.
“We want to create a restaurant to keep people from going up to SouthPark or uptown, give them another choice.”
Trattoria Antica is at 3909 Providence Road South. Conte opened it in early 2012.
Waverly is one of the largest mixed-use developments underway in Charlotte. Construction on the complex, which includes apartments, for-sale houses, office space and retail anchored with a Whole Foods, began last August.
