A mysterious series of duck deaths in the Indian Trail area southeast of Charlotte has prompted Carolina Waterfowl Rescue to ask the public to be on the look out for sick ducks.
Carolina Waterfowl says at least 40 dead wild mallards were found Wednesday in several ponds on private property in the Indian Trail area.
Preliminary lab results say the cause of death is not infectious. It is believed to be botulism, an environmental toxin that can be found in water. The source of where the birds were infected remains unknown, officials said.
Residents should lookout for ducks that are unstable on their feet or who can’t lift their heads or necks. It is hoped the birds can be given medical treatment.
Anyone who sees a sick or dead duck should call the CWR hotline at 704-668-9486 or email firstname.lastname@example.org giving exact location details.
Carolina Waterfowl said volunteers will be going out into the community later today to try to capture and bring in sick ducks.
