A Friday morning police stand off on the 4300 block of Central Avenue ended shortly before 8 a.m. Friday, when a suspect was taken into custody.
Charlotte Mecklenburg police say the stand off started about 3:09 a.m., when the department received a report of an assault with a deadly weapon involving someone who was possibly shot.
The call came from family members who were inside the apartment with the suspect. They advised police that a male relative was inside the apartment and armed with a weapon, refusing to let them leave, police said in a statement.
Police said the armed man subject barricaded himself inside of the apartment, prompting a closure of Central Avenue near Kilbourne Drive. The SWAT Team was able to safely remove the family members from inside the residence.
After a standoff with SWAT and speaking with negotiators, the man surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. He will be charged later today, officials said.
