Civil Service Board denies hearing for fired Charlotte Fire investigator

Charlotte’s Civil Service Board voted unanimously Wednesday against hearing former city Fire Investigator Crystal Eschert’s appeal of her termination late last year.

Eschert has protested her firing. She said the Fire Department retaliated against her because she was a whistleblower. She had complained about the quality of renovations at a city building.

The Fire Department has said that’s not true. It said Eschert was fired over an offensive Facebook post that questioned the response of the White House and civil rights leaders to a police shooting in Ferguson, Mo. In her post, Eschert used terms such as “thug” and “waste.”

City Manager Ron Carlee has hired an investigator to review Eschert’s allegations of retaliation. Steve Harrison
