Emergency workers in Matthews were trying to decontaminate a patient who walked into Novant Health Matthews Medical Center after coming in contact with a hazardous substance.
Lt. Chris Mollema, with Matthews Fire and EMS, said first responders didn’t know what the material was.
A person walked into the hospital claiming to have been exposed to the substance around 2:30 p.m. The patient and two hospital employees were being decontimanted.
Pictures from WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, showed people in hazmat suits conferring outside the hospital with police and firefighters.
Hospital employees were in charge of the decontamination, Mollema said. Firefighters were standing by to assist.
