Interstate 85 in Cherokee County was closed in both directions Tuesday evening after a fiery crash involving multiple vehicles, near S.C. mile marker 106.
Drivers on I-85 in North Carolina were being detoured around the wreck Tuesday night, starting at exit 4.
“The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. and both directions are still closed at this time,” the N.C. Department of Transportation said at about 10:37 p.m., in a statement. “Motorists traveling south on I-85 in North Carolina will be detoured at U.S. 29 (exit 4) into South Carolina back to I-85 South until the road reopens.”
WCNC and WBTV reported one person was killed in the crash. The crash happened a few miles south of the Carolina state line, and involved tractor-trailers, WCNC reported. WTBV reported the tractor-trailers crashed head-on.
The South Carolina State Highway Patrol advised drivers to take alternate routes and expect delays. It was unclear late Tuesday when the highway would fully reopen.
