Victim dies a week after west Charlotte shooting

One of two people shot in west Charlotte on June 9 has died of his injuries, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Cornelius Drayton, 37, died Thursday at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia. He became Charlotte’s 42nd homicide victim of 2017.

Police said the shooting took place during a drug transaction at a gas station on Queen City Drive.

An altercation erupted among three people sitting in a Honda and shots were fired, investigators said. The Honda’s driver drove away while being chased by a second car. More shots were exchanged between the two vehicles.

The Honda traveled into Gaston County until stopping at a convenience store, where police found two of the three occupants with gunshot wounds.
