Charlotte man stepped off curb into the path of Jeep and died minutes later

A pedestrian was struck and killed not far from Carolina Golf Club in south Charlotte late Thursday.

Joe Lee Stinson, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, in the 2800 block of Old Steele Creek Road near Elmin Street.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say the accident happened about 10:13 p.m. Thursday. On arrival, officers found Stinson lying in the roadway. MEDIC staff pronounced him dead of his injuries.

The initial investigation revealed Stinson was walking along Old Steele Creek Road when Emmett Marsell Cherry drove by in a 2008 Jeep Patriot. Stinson stepped off the curb directly into the path of the Jeep and was struck, police said.

Cherry immediately stopped his vehicle and attempted to render aid to Stinson, police said.

Neither excessive speed or alcohol use are suspected as contributing factors in this crash. Stinson was not in a marked crosswalk.

The crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
