A man and a teenaged boy were killed and a child suffered life-threatening injuries after a tractor-trailer and a Volkswagen Jetta collided in southwest Charlotte Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened at Steele Creek Road and Westinghouse Commons Drive. An 11-year-old girl was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with critical injuries.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the two victims – Ignacio Cordova, 32, and a 14-year-old boy who was not named – were pronounced dead at the scene.

CMPD investigators said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the wreck. Cordova and the 14-year-old were in the front seats, while the injured girl was in the back seat. Police said the Volkswagen “suddenly swerved” into the truck’s lane. Witnesses said the Volkswagen had been passing other cars, which that section of Steele Creek Road is not marked for in either direction.
