Two people were killed when a car ran into a tree early Sunday in north Charlotte, police said.

Larry Lee Lockhart Jr. was heading south in a 2012 Dodge Challenger on Hubbard Road near Haybridge Road when his car left the road, slid down an embankment and hit a tree on the passenger side. Lockhart, 40, and his passenger, 42-year-old Tabitha Denise Staton, were both killed.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have determined that speed played a role in the crash, and police are investigating to determine whether alcohol was also involved. The investigation has found that Staton was wearing her seatbelt, but Lockhart was not.
