Woman leaves church in Gastonia, gets killed pulling out of the parking lot

An 80-year-old Gastonia woman pulling out of her church parking lot Sunday was killed in a collision that also sent a teen to the hospital.

Patricia Deal was pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center, according to the Gastonia Police Department.

Investigators said the collision happened at 12:16 p.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of Union Road.

Deal was leaving Firestone Wesleyan Church and attempted to turn left onto Union Road from the church parking lot.

As she pulled out, her 1998 Ford Taurus was struck on the driver side by a 2006 Jeep Cherokee driven by Isabella Fertitta, 18, of Gastonia. Fertitta’s injuries were minor, police said.

Investigators don’t believe speed or impairment were factors. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Officer Z.J. Lechette at 704-866-6702.
