A Catawba County structure fire on U.S. 321 in Newton may have been set to cover up a murder.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office says they found a man’s body inside a burned structure Saturday and that the cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound.

The victim has been identified as Harry Lewis Bruner Jr., 40. He was found around 6:25 a.m. Saturday, reported the Observer’s news partner WBTV.

The structure was at 2622 South U.S. 321, officials said.

Sheriff Coy Reid said Tuesday the investigation is in the early stages.
