The Mount Holly Police Department has identified the teen found dead Monday at Mountain Island Lake as 15-year-old A Pao of Cedars East Court in Charlotte.

Pao was recovered 20 feet from the shoreline, in waters that are 15 feet deep, officials said.

Initial statements from witnesses indicate an accidental drowning, officials said. However, the N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine the cause of death.

Police said they were called about a missing swimmer at 3:46 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of Mountain Island Road. Officers spoke with witnesses who said they were swimming in the area when a teen went missing. Pao had been been missing for approximately 15 minutes at the time, officials said.

The search included help from Cooks Fire and Rescue, Lucia-Riverbend Fire and Rescue, Gaston Emergency Medical Service and the Gaston County Police Department, officials said.
