An Iredell County couple being sought in a jewelry theft ended up in jail accused of child abuse this week after they were found passed out in a parked car with drugs and a small child, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
The unconscious pair were in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia at the time, officials said.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell identified the two adults as Melissa Marie Smyle, 22, of Troutman and Cody Lynn Hairyes, 20, of Stony Point.
Smyle and Hairyes were found by Statesville Police in a parking lot on Shelton Avenue in Statesville, Campbell said.

The child found with them was not identified, and it was unclear Thursday what relationship the child had to the adults.
Statesville Police charged Smyle with possession of heroin, misdemeanor child abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hairyes was charged with possession of heroin and misdemeanor child abuse, Campbell said.
The two, who are dating, were being sought in connection with the Aug. 7 theft of nearly $6,000 in jewelry and coins from a home on Wildlife Road in Mooresville, officials said.
Melissa Marie Smyle had been in the home just before the items were stolen, officials said, leading police to issue a warrant for her arrest. Some of the items were later sold to a pawn shop by Hairyes, officials said.
Smyle is facing an additional charge of felony larceny in that case, and Hairyes is charged with obtaining property by false pretense.
