A hit-and-run driver who brought down a utility pole prompted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police to close Tyvola Road just east of South Boulevard early Friday.

The crash was in the 1600 block, near the Smith Family Center.

The crash, which happened about 3:35 a.m., initially knocked out power to 1,300 homes and businesses, reported the Observer’s news partner WBTV. By 5:30 a.m., that number had decreased to around 250.

The driver of the vehicle ran from the scene on foot and had not been captured as of early Friday, officials said.

Duke Energy expects to have power fully restored by 9:15 a.m.
