Interstate 85 northbound near China Grove was backed up for about 13 miles after a truck overturned on Wednesday afternoon.
The state department of transportation tweeted about the congestion around 12:45 p.m.
Highway officials have not said when they expect the congestion to ease or what caused the truck to wreck.
Interstate 77 southbound at Lake Norman, meanwhile, is experiencing a second straight day of backups. The congestion is causing up to an hour delay, and traffic isn’t much better on the alternate routes of U.S. 21/N.C. 115 through Davidson and Cornelius.
I-77 at the lake is often congested, but Hurricane Irma evacuees returning to Georgia and Florida have added more cars to the daily parking lot.
