A 17-year-old man is suspected of sexually assaulting a 34-year-old woman early Tuesday in Plaza Midwood, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Investigators said they have a warrant for the teen’s arrest but did not give his name.

“The suspect is currently being evaluated at a medical facility. The warrants will be served once the suspect is released,” police said in a statement.

The woman fought off a man who tried to sexually assault her as she watered flowers in her yard on Norcross Place, near Midwood Park, police said.

The man approached the woman at about 7:45 a.m. and asked if she’d seen his lost dog, according to police.

When she turned her back while talking to the man, he grabbed her and tried to sexually assault her, the woman told police.

CMPD has increased patrols in the area and had investigative units searching and canvassing the neighborhood throughout the day, officials said.

Anyone with additional information concerning the case or the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
