He died at 5:44 a.m. Friday in the 7200 block of North Tryon, near Interstate 85, officials say.
Witnesses told detectives they had to swerve around Wingo to avoid hitting him. However, he was eventually struck by a 2011 Camaro driven by Marlin Broadnax, 48, who stayed at the scene.
A preliminary investigation determined Wingo was crossing the northbound lanes of North Tryon Street when he was struck. The Camaro was in the far right lane and the driver attempted to stop when he saw the pedestrian, police said.
Wingo was not crossing the road at a marked crosswalk and the collision happened before sunrise. Alcohol and speed are not contributing factors for the driver.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Crash Investigation Unit, 704-432-2169.
