Charlotte will no longer pick up recyclables from the old 16-gallon red recycling bins starting July 6, the city’s Solid Waste Services department says. After that date, only the green 95-gallon carts will be emptied.
Efficiency is expected to improve by as much as 15 percent because the red bins take six times as long to empty as the green carts, which are lifted by a truck’s mechanical arm instead of being emptied by hand. The new approach also is less hazardous for employees, the city said. Steve Harrison
