Woman attacked outside Amelie’s Sunday while customers took cover inside bakery

A 23-year-old woman was hit in the head with a gun outside Amelie’s on North Davidson Street early Sunday morning, according to a police report.

The suspect — a man who hasn’t been identified yet — then fired shots in the parking lot at around 12:45 a.m., the report states.

Amelie’s employees heard the gunshots and rushed customers away from the windows and doors of the 24-hour bakery, company officials said in a statement.

No one inside Amelie’s was hurt. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the incident began as a dispute between patrons at Red@28th, a hookah lounge located on the same block as Amelie’s.

The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the police report.

In a statement, Amelie’s director of operations Mary Jayne Wilson said the bakery has been in NoDa for nearly a decade and has seemed safe.

“We are thankful no one was seriously injured and the situation was handled quickly by local authorities,” Wilson said. “Our staff quickly enacted our emergency policy and procedures to ensure the safety of our staff and customers inside our doors.”

Amelie’s shares the parking lot with several other businesses in the same shopping center. Wilson said Amelie’s has reached out to the shopping center’s property management company to increase security.

Two cars — a red 2015 Ford Mustang and a gray 2011 Nissan Altima — were hit by gunfire, the report states, causing about $800 worth of damage to each car. One of the cars was occupied at the time of the shooting, police said.

Police are still investigating the incident. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
