Health officials on Tuesday urged people not to swim or otherwise touch the water in an unnamed Lake Norman cove after 100 gallons of raw sewage spilled from a manhole in an eastern Lincoln County subdivision.

The spill occurred in the 3900 block of Blue Dory Lane in the Eastwind Cove subdivision, off Webbs Road in Denver, N.C.

The manhole overflowed after a power failure at a sewage pump station led to a pump failure, Lincoln County Health Director Margaret Dollar said. Dollar issued the swimming advisory at 12:30 p.m.

Workers stopped the spill, and Lincoln County Public Works is taking water samples to determine the level of potential bacterial infection in Lake Norman. “No Swimming Advisory” signs were posted, and a public notification message was sent to nearby property owners.

The advisory will remain until at least two consecutive samples indicate fecal coliform counts under 200/ml, per state guidelines.
