Mecklenburg Special Olympians to compete in Spring Games

More than 1,100 Special Olympics athletes will parade into Bojangles’ Coliseum on Monday for the start of the weeklong 2015 Special Olympics Mecklenburg County Spring Games.

About 400 fans were in the stands last year to cheer them on.

The athletes will compete in track-and-field or aquatics events at Charlotte Country Day School, the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center, Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatic Center and Mallard Creek High School.

Admission and parking to the opening ceremonies and competition events are free. Here is the schedule:

▪ Opening Ceremonies, 10 a.m.-noon Monday, Bojangles’ Coliseum, 2700 E. Independence Blvd., Charlotte.

▪ Athletics competition and awards (middle/high/adult ages), 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Charlotte Country Day School, 1440 Carmel Road, Charlotte.

▪ Athletics competition and awards (elementary ages), 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 22, Charlotte Country Day School, 1440 Carmel Road, Charlotte.

▪  Aquatics competition and awards (all ages), 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 22, Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, 800 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Charlotte.

▪  Aquatics competition and awards (all ages), 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 23, Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics, 11725 Verhoeff Drive, Huntersville.

▪  Athletics team competition and awards (adults), 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 24, Mallard Creek High School, 3825 Johnston Oehler Road, Charlotte.
