An 18-year-old Belmont Abbey College student is being accused of sexually assaulting a fellow student at the school over the weekend.
Belmont Police arrested Zachary Thomas Harvath of Whitmore Lake, Michigan, on Monday and charged him with first-degree sexual offense, which is a felony. A bond of $250,000 was set and he was in Gaston County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators say they were called Saturday by a student at the college, who reported she had been sexually assaulted on the campus. Harvath was arrested after “a thorough investigation into the allegations,” police said.
The case is believed to be an isolated incident and not a random act, police said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Angela Spataro with the Belmont Police at 704-829-4082.
