When Robert Hildreth and Laura Neff of Charlotte saw a long black snake slithering from their spice cabinet to their egg basket Sunday evening, they grabbed an iPhone and shot video. The 54-second clip of their visitor unhinging its jaw and helping itself had been viewed more than 150,000 times on Facebook Monday night, with the count rising by about 10,000 an hour.

“I think it’s the one-two punch of horror and fascination,” Neff said.

Neff said they heard a bang from the kitchen around 6 p.m. Sunday. They saw a cinnamon jar on the floor and a rat snake about 4 feet long descending toward the eggs. Hildreth grabbed his phone – Neff’s was too close to the snake to reach for – and shot the clip.

They let the snake finish the egg, then caught it between two brooms and moved it unharmed to the outdoors, Neff said. They posted the video on Facebook shortly afterward and their friends started sharing.

“Um, so this is one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen not on National Geographic,” said one.

“This would have given me heart failure,” said another.

Hildreth and Neff, who live between uptown Charlotte and Mountain Island Lake, are having fun with their online fame. But they found the hole in their laundry room where they believe their visitor entered and covered it with “a VERY heavy concrete block.”
