Police said a man drinking beer while sitting on railroad tracks died Friday in uptown Charlotte when he was struck by a northbound Norfolk Southern train pulling 39 freight cars.
The train engineer sounded the train’s horn when he saw the man about 5 p.m. near Smith Street at Eighth Street, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
The man got up, gathered his belongings and started walking on the tracks with his back to the train when he was struck and killed, police said. Medic pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Police are withholding the man’s name until his family is notified.
