A 59-year-old man died Saturday when his 2014 Subaru Outback struck a stopped Walmart tractor-trailer at East Marion Street and Dixon Boulevard (U.S. 74) in Shelby, police said.

George “Jay” Allen Mebane of Shelby was pronounced dead at the scene, Police Chief Jeff Ledford said Saturday night.

The wreck happened at about 5 p.m. when the Outback veered off to the left while traveling east on Marion Street toward Dixon Boulevard, Ledford said. The Outback then drove into the intersection and struck the truck in the westbound lane of Dixon, the chief said.

The impact caused the tractor-trailer to slide to the left, striking a vehicle sitting in the other lane, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Donald Decker, 60, of Mint Hill, was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center, where he was evaluated and released with no injuries. The driver of the third vehicle was uninjured, Ledford said.

No charges will be filed in the wreck, Ledford said. Police are still trying to determine why the Outback veered off to the left on Marion and struck the tractor-trailer, the chief said. Police were still on the scene late Saturday.

The wreck closed both sides of the highway.
