A Gastonia man is in police custody after barricading himself inside a home for five hours Monday morning and threatening to blow it up.

The incident began at 4:12 a.m. when Gastonia police officers tried to serve a warrant for larceny of a stolen vehicle on Ted Wayne Campbell, 55, said police spokeswoman Donna Lahser.

Campbell threatened to blow up his home on Mary Avenue with natural gas, she said.

The department’s Special Situations Unit arrived to negotiate with the man. Neighbors on both sides of the house were notified.

“He wanted media attention, and when he was assured the media was present he gave himself up” shortly after 9 a.m., Lahser said.

No injuries were reported from the incident.
