Woman killed in crash with prominent businessman

A pregnant Kings Mountain woman was killed when her car collided with the Cadillac of a prominent Gastonia businessman on Monday, according to Gastonia police.

The unborn child of Samantha Kay Thomas, 34, also was killed, the Shelby Star reported. The family was to name the boy Elijah Dean Thomas, the newspaper reported.

The crash happened just after 1 p.m. Monday at West Garrison Boulevard and South Vance Street. Investigators believe that Julius Dalpiaz had pulled onto West Garrison Boulevard when his Cadillac was struck by Thomas’ Honda Civic.

Dalpiaz had just left a Noon Optimist Club meeting held at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Gaston. Neither Thomas nor a front seat passenger, her 61-year-old brother-in-law, Sherman Thomas of Kings Mountain, were wearing seat belts, according to the Shelby Star.

Dalpiaz suffered a fractured pelvis and was transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, according to the newspaper.

Samantha Thomas died at the hospital.

Thomas’ 11-month-old son, who was buckled into a child safety seat, had minor injuries.

No one had been charged on Tuesday. Investigators plan to present the case to the Gaston County District Attorney’s Office to determine if anyone should be charged..
