An Elon University student from Cornelius died Wednesday after falling from a balcony at a residence hall at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Demitri Allison had left the Elon University campus, and his teammates, friends and family asked police to look for him because they were “concerned for his well-being and emotional state,” according to Smith Jackson, Elon’s vice president for student life.
Authorities haven’t said what led Allison to fall or given other details. Pictures from the Daily Tar Heel, the UNC student newspaper, showed police tape roping off an area near the hall’s basketball courts.
Around 4:30 p.m. Allison fell from Morrison Residence Hall, a 10-story building on UNC-CH’s south campus.

Allison, a junior and management major at Elon, was an all-state receiver at SouthLake Christian Academy in Huntersville.
“Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates,” said Athletics Director Dave Blank. “We mourn his loss deeply, and we pray for his family and loved ones.”
Elon is hosting a “Gathering of Friends” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Rhodes Stadium, where the school’s football team plays. The university also planned to make counselors and chaplains available to talk to students.
