North Carolina Highway Patrol investigators are seeking help in identifying an all-terrain vehicle driver who tried to run down a state trooper Saturday morning in Rowan County’s Enochville community north of Kannapolis. The trooper was seriously injured, officials said.
The incident occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday, when a trooper pulled over two ATV operators on Harmony Lane in the China Grove subdivision, for illegally driving on nearby N.C. 153.
Once the trooper exited his vehicle, one of the two drivers intentionally drove toward him at a high rate of speed, striking the trooper, officials said.
The operator then turned around and attempted to strike the trooper a second time. At that point, the trooper fired his gun attempting to avoid further injury. Both operators then fled the scene, officials said.
