Three Iredell County sheriff’s deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the SBI investigates the fatal shooting of a bank robbery suspect on Friday night.
Deputies shot the suspect after he fired a shot at them in woods near Union Grove, said Maj. Todd Carver.
Authorities received a bank alarm about 5 p.m. Friday from the Capital Bank at 1439 W. Memorial Highway in Union Grove, in northern Iredell County, Carver said.
The sheriff’s department’s K-9 unit, other deputies and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers responded within minutes and set up a two-mile perimeter, then began tracking the suspect. Two hours later, they found him in woods, down a ravine near a creek. He was about a mile from the bank.

The deputies tried to coax him out of the woods and surrender. He didn’t. So they went in after him and the suspect fired at least once at the deputies, Carver said.
