Ashleigh West felt an adrenaline rush when she picked up the receipt a family left her Thursday at Don Julio Mexican Restaurant in Waxhaw.
“I was staring at it like it wasn’t real,” the 18-year-old server recalled Saturday.
The family left her a 100 percent tip of $101.79. “Happy Mother’s Day!” they wrote on the receipt with a smiley face.
“For somebody to do that for a complete stranger, it shows the kind of heart they have,” she said.

Her previous biggest tip was $45 at another restaurant, but it was in the right percentage for the size of the bill.
West works Friday and Saturday nights at Don Julio on Providence Road South. But she and all the other servers had been called in Thursday night because it was Cinco de Mayo and especially busy.
West recalls complimenting the man on his haircut. It was spiked in front, and she told him she’d like a similar style on her son, 19-month-old Micah. She mentioned Micah was asleep back at her Waxhaw home.
When she gave the family the check, she told them, “I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the evening.”
She didn’t see the tip until after the family left, because she’d returned to the kitchen for food for other tables she was serving.
“I almost cried,” West posted on Facebook that night. “A complete stranger who made me feel so wonderful tonight …They left before I saw this but I wish I could’ve told them thank you x’s a million.”
