A 20-year-old Rock Hill man was killed when his SUV struck a pickup head-on near York on Monday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 4:50 p.m. on S.C. 161 about three miles east of York, according to Lance Cpl. Tony Keller of the Highway Patrol.
A 2000 Kia SUV was traveling north when it crossed the center line and struck a southbound Dodge truck head-on, Keller said. The driver of the Kia was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
York County Coroner Sabrina Gast on Tuesday identified the driver as Justin Malik Dye, 20, of Rock Hill. Autopsy and toxicology are pending, Gast said.
The driver of the pickup, a 59-year-old York man, had to be extricated by emergency crews, Keller said. He was taken by ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where his condition was unknown Tuesday.
One of the truck’s passengers, a 61-year-old York man, was taken to the same Charlotte hospital, Keller said. A second passenger, a 62-year-old York man, was taken to Piedmont Medical Center. All three men were wearing seat belts.
The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
