Saying the boating season has started as one of the deadliest on Lake Norman, Cornelius-Lemley Fire & Rescue has scheduled a “Fun in the Sun” family safety event Friday night and free on-the-water boat checks Saturday and Sunday.
“Preventing another drowning or another person’s death this year is our only goal,” the department said in announcing the events.
Only a month into the season, three people have drowned in Lake Norman and several more in surrounding lakes.

Firefighters also have responded to four boat fires on Lake Norman, a number that requires several years combined to match.
“Fun in the Sun” is 5-8 p.m. Friday at Peninsula Yacht Club, 18501 Harbor Light Blvd., Cornelius.
Classes every 15 minutes will cover swimmer, stand-up paddle board and kayaking safety, how to fuel your boat safely, what to do in a water emergency, how many life jackets you need on your boat and several other topics.
Free vessel safety checks will be offered, along with a bouncy house and other children’s entertainment.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Cornelius Fire Boat 4 will be anchored near navigational marker D4, just beyond the Cornelius sand bar. Boaters are encouraged to moor beside the fire boat for a safety check and a tour of the boat.
